The city’s airport had a big year in 2012.

The Thunder Bay International Airport held its annual general meeting Tuesday, and officials reported that there was a six per cent increase in passenger traffic in 2012.

Airport Authority president Scott McFadden says that increase amounts to a record 761,000 passengers.

The airport’s operating earnings increased 33 per cent, to $1.5 million.

McFadden says he believes growth in mining, health sciences and manufacturing sectors are responsible for the airports strong 2012.

He added that the Airport Authority’s most important achievement last year was the introduction of the United Airlines flights to Chicago.

“Certainly from a leisure travel perspective United is doing well,” McFadden said. “in other words there are lots of people flying and there are a lot of people using that service.”
