THUNDER BAY — A city councillor facing an assault charge has made his first appearance in court.
Coun. Trevor Giertuga disclosed to council on Nov. 18 he was charged with assault following a June altercation with one of his brothers.
Giertuga appeared at the Thunder Bay Courthouse on Wednesday and said he is requesting disclosure from the Crown’s office.
The at-large councillor was self-represented and told the court he was not yet seeking a lawyer.
The case will return to court on Jan. 16, 2025.
Giertuga denied the allegations to city council when he went public with the assault charge.
"I'll have my day in court where the entire circumstances will come out. I believe I'll be vindicated, but I just want the public to know," he told council.
None of the allegations against Giertuga have been proven in court.
