City Discontinues Landfill Free Week this May

April 26, 2016 – The City of Thunder Bay will discontinue the annual Free Week at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility in May as part of a recommended action item in the Solid Waste Management Strategy.

“The City is continuing to make progress in advancing the recommendations in the Solid Waste Management Strategy,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “This move is an important step toward significantly reducing the amount of unnecessary waste brought to the landfill and improving the solid waste and recycling services provided to the community.”

Approved in principle by Council in 2014, the Solid Waste Management Strategy advised the City to eliminate free disposal week and explore other options to better manage materials that are disposed of during this period.

The decision to cancel the event was made by City Council through the 2016 budget process.

Residents can still dispose of unneeded at local second-hand shops, charity retailers, and trade and sell websites. Treasure Exchange Days, a city-wide exchange event hosted in the spring and fall, also allows residents to leave reusable items at the curb labeled “free” for anyone to pick up.
