City implements changes in water meter readings, landfill traffic

The changes result from efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is asking residents and businesses to submit their water meter readings by phone, regardless of whether or not they have a remote reading device.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city says water meters and remote devices are not being read by the city at this time.

Readings should be submitted by calling 625-3160.

They may also be submitted online.

If a reading is not sent in, water usage for the billing period will be estimated.

The city cautions that estimates may be higher than actual usage for businesses that are not currently operating, so it's advisable to submit a reading.

Last month, city council decided to waive late-payment fees on water bills due in April, May and June.

Traffic flow restricted at landfill

As part of its efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the city is restricting traffic flow at the Mapleward Road landfill site.

Only 10 vehicles will be allowed in the disposal site at one time.

Residents are also asked to maximize their loads in order to reduce the number of trips to the landfill.

In addition, the city is asking people to use the debit/credit card tap function when paying the fee in order to reduce contact with city workers.
