THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay has issued a weather alert, warning that forecast snowfall and gusting winds could impact vulnerable residents.
Accumulations of 10 to 15 centimetres were expected Monday in the city, according to Environment Canada, with up to 25 centimetres possible in areas to the northwest and wind gusts up to 50 km/h.
The city issued an alert under its COVID-19 Severe Weather Response Plan Monday morning, encouraging residents to be alert for those who may need assistance, and check in on friends and neighbours who may be more vulnerable.
That includes infants and children, the elderly, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts, and people lacking proper shelter, clothing or food, the city said.
The city urges residents who see someone on the street in need of outreach assistance to call SOS at (807) 620-7678, or 9-1-1 in the case of medical emergencies.
The city also reminded the public of the availability of the Shelter House and Salvation Army’s 24-hour shelters, daytime warming centres at PACE and Elevate NWO, the Out of the Cold Program at Grace Place, and the Urban Abbey’s overnight women’s shelter.
More information and tips on staying warm are available at the city’s website.
