THUNDER BAY — The union representing the bulk of the City of Thunder Bay's municipal workforce has accepted the terms of a proposed new collective agreement with the city.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees local 87 made the announcement Monday night.

In a brief statement about the outcome of the vote, the union said the members "clearly are in favour" of the tentative agreement.

The vote totals were not disclosed, but a spokesperson described the approval as overwhelming.

The three-year deal will expire in January 2023.

The settlement was reached last week after two days of bargaining with the help of a provincial conciliator.

CUPE local 87 represents about 700 city municipal employees.

City council is scheduled to ratify the contract on Dec. 21.

Details of the collective agreement will not be made public until ratification is completed.
