THUNDER BAY — The Canadian Union of Public Employees says it has reached a tentative deal with the City of Thunder Bay on a new collective agreement.
CUPE Local 87 announced this morning that bargaining teams for the two sides came to an understanding Tuesday night.
It followed two days of negotiations assisted by a provincial conciliator.
Union members will vote on the agreement on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
Until then, no details of the deal will be made public.
The union had entered the talks armed with an overwhelming strike mandate from the approximately 700 members of the local.
President Dana Vacek charged that the city seemed determined "to provoke a conflict" by seeking concessions.
The city declined to comment at the time.
After word of the tentative agreement came down, City Manager Norm Gale issued a statement thanking both sides "for their hard work and for coming to an understanding."
Gale said the settlement terms will be presented to city council for ratification on December 21.
