City on track for pedestrian bridge

The bridge will allow users to cut through the park and trail system rather than walk around Junot Avenue and Golf Links Road.

THUNDER BAY — The construction of a pedestrian bridge in George Burke Park is on schedule.

The bridge is part of a project to allow trail users, residents and school children easier access to other parts of the neighbourhood, said project manager Mike Vogrig.

"The bridge provides much better access for people trying to access the junior high and the high school maybe coming from River Terrace rather than having to walk all the way around on Junot Ave or Golf Links Road.

"So this fills a nice gap for those commuters, students who maybe want to walk to school, bike to school, and also provides some access for recreation. It's a quick way to get to George Burke Park."

Vogrig said the project is on budget and has two more months to go.

"Depending on how the concrete curing goes, we're on schedule. I believe the contract completion schedule is Oct. 31. We'll hold to that date for now."

The project was given a budget of around $1 million
