No charges to issue in relation to man's death.

THUNDER BAY -- The province's Special Investigations Unit has cleared Thunder Bay Police in the death of a 50-year-old who was in their custody in July of last year.

Roland McKay from Big Trout Lake had been taken into custody after being found intoxicated and unconscious behind a Fort William Road business on the night of July 19.

After being cleared by EMS personnel, he was transported to the Balmoral Station and put in a holding cell. A few hours later, McKay was found not breathing. CPR was performed, but he was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Now, the Director of the Special Investigations Unit has released their findings.

Tony Loparco says surveillance videos show that no police officers mistreated or abused McKay.

He added that police were lawfully acting within their duties, and he can find no basis for laying criminal charges.

As a result, the investigation has been closed.
