THUNDER BAY — Police are cautioning members of the public about a scam that's seeing local residents victimized by extortionists.

The Thunder Bay Police Service's Economic Crime Unit has received reports that individuals are receiving threatening messages and demands for payment using cryptocurrency.

In a news release Monday, TBPS said recipients of the messages are told their electronic device, including camera and microphone, has been hacked, and that there is evidence they have been accessing illegal material online.

The scammer then threatens to expose the victim unless payment is received.

Police said the perpetrator may also include personal information about the victim, and provide specific instructions on how to make payment.

TBPS advises residents to delete these messages and not send any form of payment.

Police also suggest that family members and friends speak to those who may be vulnerable, and warn them against falling for the scam.
