THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay is looking for public input on relaunching programs for older adults.

Two centres where seniors’ programs are usually offered – the 55 Plus Centre on River Street and the West Arthur Community Centre – have yet to reopen since closing their doors in March due to COVID-19.

In June, city council approved a plan to keep the centres closed through at least Aug. 31, and no official reopening date has yet been announced.

A survey launched Monday by the city seeks to gauge users’ comfort levels with returning to those centres, as well as their interest in online offerings.

The survey is available at the city’s website through Aug. 30 and takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete. The city said it will also reach out directly to current users of the centres for feedback.

“Information gathered will help inform the direction the reopening process will take in terms of when the centres may open, what programming may be made available, and patrons’ level of comfort with safety measures in place,” the city said in a release.

Respondents are asked how comfortable they are with the centres’ reopening, what would help them feel more comfortable, which programs they’re most interested in seeing brought back, and whether they’re interested in online programming.

The survey also asks whether users are more concerned with seeing the 55 Plus or West Arthur centres – or both – reopened.
