THUNDER BAY — The city is looking for feedback from the public on a proposal to implement a red light camera program at 10 intersections

Residents are invited to complete a survey about the idea.

City administration has already strongly recommended that cameras be installed at intersections with higher traffic collision rates.

"A report from the city’s engineering division found red light camera programs led to an average 25 per cent reduction in right-angle collisions, which cause just over a quarter of all fatal road accidents in Ontario.

The same studies found the cameras also caused a 15 per cent increase in rear-end collisions. However, those are generally less severe and far less fatal."

Although council initially approved the idea in January, some members had second thoughts last week, and requested public consultation.

The survey is available online until April 16.

Currently, a dozen Ontario communities have red light cameras.

The fine for a traffic violation captured on camera is $325, with no demerit points.

City administration has predicted that revenue from fines will more than cover operating costs of the program.
