THUNDER BAY -- The city and transit union have reached a tentative deal that could avoid a strike by specialized transit workers.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 966 president Shelia Kivisto said the deal was reached Tuesday.
"A strike will be avoided ," she said. "We have a tentative agreement that we are bringing to our members tonight."
City council will also have to ratify the deal when it meets again Nov. 3.
On Friday the union, which represents the nine full-time and 11 part-time operators, issued formal notice of a strike deadline effective at 12:01 a.m. Monday morning. That deadline had been moved back 48 hours.
The city has operated the accessible transit service, which was formerly known as HAGI Transit, since the beginning of this year.
There are about 1,000 registered residents who utilize the service.
