THUNDER BAY — Users of the recreation trail around Boulevard Lake are now required not only to practise social distancing, but also to take a detour around the Boulevard Lake Dam.
The city has turned the popular walkway across the dam into a one-way route because it's too narrow to provide a safe distance between people walking in opposite directions.
A posted sign advises users that it can only be used for travelling from west to east.
People walking east to west must detour via a route that takes them down to Cumberland Street before crossing the Current River Bridge, then returning to the Boulevard Lake recreation trail.
One trail user posted a message on Facebook lamenting the fact that a detour was necessary because people can't be relied on to follow safe practices for using the walkway.
She said she had waited at one end until walkers who had already started from the opposite side were safely across, but found that other users weren't doing the same when she was already halfway across the dam.
"People are just not thinking," the woman wrote.
