The repaving of a section of the Harbour Expressway will take 10 days to complete.

THUNDER BAY - A section of the Harbour Expressway between Memorial Avenue and Carrick Street is now fully closed for repaving.

Matthew Miedema, manager of the engineering division with the city of Thunder Bay, said for safety reasons they decided to close all lanes rather than leaving one direction open.

“We’ve had safety concerns lately with traffic going around construction crews,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of close calls lately with paving crews on arterial roads. A lot of traffic is patient and slows down, but there is traffic is going at high speeds and putting crews at risk. And we can get this done in half the time.”

The work is a continuation of the paving and intersection renewal at Memorial Avenue and the Harbour Expressway that began earlier this year.

The old asphalt is currently being removed and repaving will start shortly after.

The current work is expected to take 10 days. While the work is being completed, the section of the Harbour Expressway is closed to traffic in both directions.

Carrick Street and Fort William Road remain open to traffic during the work.
