Clothing Centre seeks warm clothes for people in need

In addition to donating clothes, anyone who wants to help can also donate money or volunteer.

THUNDER BAY – The Clothing Centre has put out a call for more donations to help support its clothing referral program.

Located at 404 May St. N., the Clothing Centre’s community clothing assistance program aims to give people going through hard times community support so they can live better lives.

“That way they can better use their own funds and they don't have to spend it on clothing,” said Raul Rici, communications coordinator.

“They can use it on food or housing, whatever other needs they have.”

Over 150 community partners refer their clients to the Clothing Centre, where they are then provided with free clothing.

Each client is entitled to up to 30 articles of clothing, including three outfits with one jacket and one pair of shoes and every three months they are welcome to exchange the clothes for the next season.

The program takes on a special importance during the winter season as people need jackets and long underwear to stay warm in the city’s cold climate. Rici said the centre is well stocked on winter clothing for women but is in serious need of winter clothing for men, especially jackets.

In addition to donating clothes, anyone who wants to help can also donate money. A donation of $35 per month or $400 per year, would sponsor one family - providing them with what they would need for each season - and they are also always in need of volunteers to help out at the store.

“We have a very in-depth volunteer program where they can help here with sorting. The clothing store is always in need of people to operate it, and we also need people in administration and back in the office for communications and other functions.”
