Coffee shop reports another attack

Less than a year after Bay Village Coffee reported attacks including a smashed window and homophobic letter, the north side business has suffered another act of vandalism.

THUNDER BAY – A north side coffee shop that reported attacks including a smashed window and a homophobic letter early in 2022 has suffered another, similar act of vandalism.

The owners of Bay Village Coffee posted images of a shop window apparently smashed with a cinder block on social media early Tuesday.

“OH NO NOT AGAIN!!!,” the post read. “It’s not even been a full year since our last ‘rauction,’” referring to an auction the business held with the rock used to smash its window in February, benefitting the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

“We know that our cookies are good but c’mon this is getting ridiculous already.”

The post also promised the shop would be open as scheduled on Wednesday. Bay Village Coffee owners could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.

The news prompted an outpouring of support, with hundreds of comments condemning the attack and expressing solidarity with the business.

Earlier this year, hundreds of people showed up to a solidarity rally in March to express support after the owners shared a homophobic letter that made reference to the rock thrown through its window in February.

One image posted by the shop on Tuesday shows a Thunder Bay police officer examining the scene. The Thunder Bay Police Service could not immediately provide information on the incident on Tuesday.
