THUNDER BAY -- Despite the latest frigid temperatures, there have not been any reports of frozen pipes, but the city is dealing with multiple water-main breaks.
City crews are working to repair breaks on High Street, Huron Avenue, Moodie Street, Birchwood Crescent and Isabella Street.
North-side sewer and water supervisor Gerald Luty said water-main breaks are normal routine for this time of year and each break is a unique case.
“You’re up against different factors,” he said.
Last winter’s polar vortex left many residents with frozen pipes and Luty said the only way to avoid a frozen pipe is to heat the area around the pipes.
“If you have a crawl space, make sure there is heat in it,” he said, adding they’re not recommending people start running their water yet.
However, for those that have had frozen pipes before, the city will take a meter reading and put them on a fixed water rate.
And if pipes freeze, Luty said try using a hairdryer or other heat source to thaw them.
Anyone with frozen pipes or who sees a water-main break should call dispatch at 625-2195.
