THUNDER BAY – Ontario Provincial Police  have confirmed one person died on Friday in a dramatic Highway 61 collision.

The crash, which involved three vehicles, closed the highway between Broadway Avenue and Chippewa Road for several hours.

"It's a fatality and one person is deceased, as far as I know," a police spokesman told CKPR News.

Police said a southbound SUV struck a mid-size passenger vehicle heading the opposite direction at the Kaministiquia Bridge. Another southbound SUV then struck the car, whose driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the car, as well as the drivers of both SUVs, were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Highway 61 remains closed, with traffic being detoured from Arthur Street to Highway 130.

Information on the deceased driver is not being released until next-of-kin have been notified.

OPP advise a second collision, at the intersection of Highway 61 and Arthur Street, has shut the highway to one lane at that point.
