THUNDER BAY – Confederation College celebrated the accomplishments of 180 students from its Academic Upgrading program at an in-person ceremony in Thunder Bay.
Twenty-five students received an Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate, up over 300 per cent from last year. This certificate is provincially recognized as a Grade 12 equivalent and includes courses in chemistry, physics, biology and self-management. The Academic Upgrading program offers an individualized approach to learning and prepares students to meet their educational, apprenticeship and/or employment goals. Following the completion of the preparatory courses, students can gain direct entry into postsecondary programs and apprenticeships, and/or earn their ACE Certificate.“We are proud of our Academic Upgrading students and what they have accomplished,” said Kathleen Lynch, president of Confederation College. “These students have shown courage and determination, working diligently to complete their studies, even with added challenges related to the pandemic. Congratulations to all!”
Eighty students recognized have already begun their post secondary journies. Some were able to stay in their home communities of Greenstone and Marathon to begin their Practical Nursing Diploma. These campuses have not been able to offer this program in nearly 10 years, but working with the College, have reintroduced the program due to a shortage of Practical Nurses in the area.One student, Michelle Wanecki, persevered through many challenges in order to earn her ACE certificate. Michelle joined the program without a computer, but was forced to work online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She joined classes from her cell phone, and completed coursework while working a full time job and caring for her daughter.“Michelle’s positive attitude carried her through the courses. The students being recognized have laid a strong foundation to succeed in their future post secondary endevours,’ Judy Barton, program coordinator of Academic Upgrading, noted.Recognition Day showcases the accomplishments, dedication and success of students in Thunder Bay and the region. A number of awards, certificates and bursaries were also presented.
