Confederation College helps students find 'home-sharing' options

Students renting rooms from homeowners can get a discount by doing chores

THUNDER BAY — Confederation College is trying something new to take on the increasing challenges students face in finding affordable housing.

The college announced Monday that it has signed a new partnership with SpacesShared, an online platform that connects students with residents of the community who have spare rooms to rent.

It said the service not only increases the supply of student housing but encourages intergenerational engagement, which benefits students as well as the broader community.

SpacesShared uses a sophisticated algorithm to match students and hosts based on preferences, location, and personality.

The college said safety is a priority, so students and hosts are required to verify their identity, undergo background checks, and adhere to strict guidelines to ensure a secure and supportive living environment.

The platform also offers a unique "Helpers' Discount" feature, by which students who assist with pre-approved household tasks receive a five per cent rent reduction for each hour of weekly help provided.

Mike Rozic, director of public safety and risk management at Confederation, said "This collaboration with SpacesShared is another step in our ongoing efforts to support our students' housing needs. It compliments our existing initiatives, such as lowering our residence fees and increasing our on-campushousing capacity."

SpacesShared CEO Rylan Kinnon said the platform offers more affordable housing and provides residents a unique chance to support the next generation while earning extra income.

"It's a win-win for the entire community," he said.
