THUNDER BAY — An anonymous foundation has gifted Confederation College with a donation of $350,000.

The money will go toward annual entrance scholarships for self-identified Indigenous students.

Incoming college president Michelle Salo said the contribution will help the college fulfill its commitment to support and empower Indigenous students.

"These scholarships will provide much-needed financial support, enabling students to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential," she said.

Each year, the college will award 10 scholarships worth $4,000.

Students who continue full-time studies in the same program will be eligible for an additional $3,000 per year for up to three years.

The recipients will be selected based on financial need.

"We are deeply appreciative of this donation, which will have a profound impact on the lives of Indigenous students," said Leona Scanlon, spokesperson for the Negahneewin Council, which is comprised of representatives of various Indigenous organizations.

"Investing in their education also represents an investment into the future of our communities and the region."

As of the spring of 2024, the college had about 700 Indigenous students, representing almost one-quarter of the college's domestic enrolment in full-time programs.
