Conflix screens 2023 thesis films over the weekend

The Film Production Students at Confederation College were excited to show off what they made

THUNDER BAY – The Film Production Program at Confederation College, Conflix, hosted multiple film nights over the weekend to showcase the talent and hard work of its 2023 graduating class.

From Sci-Fi, to horror, to romance, attendees were able to experience a variety of genres in the 34 films that were showcased at both the Friday night and Sunday afternoon screenings, resulting in about 4 hours of entertainment.

Film Production Program Coordinator Eric Weller said film night is like an end of year celebration and is an important milestone for the students who are finishing up on two years of hard work.

“It's important to them in a number of ways, mainly it's having a tangible product if you will, that sort of demonstrates their abilities and showcases their ability to start a project, work on it and finish it,” he said.

“You know, bring something to completion and it's a wonderful marriage of, you know, the technical as well as the artistic.”

Students in the two-year program learn a comprehensive overview of every aspect of film production including directing, scriptwriting, sound mixing and art direction.

Montana van Zanderbergen, who directed In His Labyrinth said that she’s very relieved now that the big night is over.

“I think it was a lot of pressure and I was very nervous,” she said. “It was very nerve wracking to be here on the big film night and have so many people sitting in expecting these wonderful films and you just don't want to let them down.”

Both film nights took place in the college's newly renovated lecture theatre, which Paige Wilson, director of I want to kill my roommate, said added some additional excitement.

“It's pretty cool, honestly, and like the sound is so much better and like the quality of everything is super great and the chairs are super comfortable, which is sweet,” she said. “But yeah, it's pretty cool being able to be the first to show all of our movies up here.”

All thesis films will be uploaded and available to view online
