THUNDER BAY – The outgoing class of Confederation College film students got the chance to see their work on the big screen this weekend.

The annual “Film Night” celebration was a short film festival held on Friday evening and all-day Sunday with student films being screened throughout the day in the college’s Dibaajimogamig Lecture Theatre.

“It’s a very important, very prestigious weekend for our students here,” said Eric Weller, Film Production Program coordinator. “Their families fly in from all over the country and it’s a real experience. It’s a culmination of an awful lot of work.”

The second-year class produced 33 short films, totalling roughly 4 hours of runtime, so the program had to divide the showings into separate chunks.

“We basically make the equivalent of 2.5 feature films here every year at the college and these are just the second-year films,” said Weller. “I think if you add up all of the movies we make every year it ends up being closer to 250 to 300 films every year.”

Beyond giving the students a chance to show their work to their families, the festival also gives them the opportunity to leave their mark on the community.

“That’s the most amazing experience I can have right now,” said Daniel Cossio. “Because there’s nothing such as seeing just reacting live to your film, hearing the people clapping- screaming in my case as it was a scary film.”

For those who missed the chance to attend one of the screenings but still wish to watch the films, they will be available in one week at conflix.ca.
