Consumer carbon tax cancelled, gas prices plummet

Prices at the pump dropped by as much as 20 cents a litre on Tuesday.

THUNDER BAY — Gas prices are down significantly in Thunder Bay – and that’s no April Fool’s joke.

Stations in the city have dropped prices by as much as 20 cents a litre, coinciding with the federal government’s decision to scrap the controversial consumer carbon tax.

The price for gas at the Esso station on Red River Road was $1.559 for a litre of regular unleaded on Monday night, but by Tuesday morning the price dropped to $1.359.

Other stations in the area are selling a litre of regular unleaded for $1.389.

Prices on Fort William First Nation were already below current city levels before the carbon tax was dropped.

Ditching the carbon tax was one of the key election promises made by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, but when Mark Carney took over as Liberal leader, he beat Poilievre to the punch, announcing the consumer portion of the tax would be cancelled on April 1.

A federal election is scheduled for April 28.
