THUNDER BAY – Spencer Blackwell was the overtime hero the suddenly hot Thunderwolves needed to stretch their win streak to three.

The veteran forward scored 3:36 into overtime to lead Lakehead past the visiting Nipissing Lakers 3-2, who sent the game into an extra frame with a pair of third-period goals that helped erase a 2-0 LU lead.

Luca Faciano, on the power play in the first, and Malte Hasselgren in the second, also with the man advantage, fronted the Thunderwolves a 2-0 lead, but Kyle Foreman had other ideas in the third.

He broke Carson Cherepak’s shutout bid at 4:11 of the final regulation frame, then tied things up 2-2 at 13:19 of the third.

The win, Lakehead’s third in a row over the Lakers, vaulted the Thunderwolves (6-3-1) into solo second in the OUA West, with games in hand on two of the three team tied for third. LU trails Western by two points.

Guelph, in that three-way tie for third with TMU and Toronto, will hit the Fort William Gardens ice next Friday and Saturday as the Thunderwolves homestand continues.

Note: The OUA website credited the overtime goal to Jack Cook.  We apologize for the error.
