THUNDER BAY – A few animals managed to find their forever-homes this weekend and many more were able to get some much-needed veterinary services thanks to some corrections officers from Thunder Bay.
The 2024 Corrections Cares Adopt a Pet Day was held at three Pet Valu Locations on Saturday in support of three local animal rescues.
“So far I've been at Arthur Street and here, and it's been quite busy at both,” said Dana Bruno, correctional officer 2. “My next stop is Golf Links.”
Along with connecting animals to families, Corrections Cares was also selling cupcakes and “pupcakes” on site with proceeds going to help cover vet bills for the partnered rescues.
“Over the years, we usually raise about $1,500 per year per rescue,” said Bruno. “So, each rescue that comes leaves here with a little bit of a fund.”
Each Pet Valu had a local rescue that had some animals to meet and get to know and possibly apply to give them their forever home.
The Arthur Street location featured Paws for Love Dog Rescue, a registered charity dedicated to providing homeless puppies and dogs with loving forever families.
Thunderbird Wildlife Rescue, which is dedicated to rehabilitating wild birds of prey, was present at the Golf Links Road location. The Dawson Road location featured Murillo Mutts Respite Refuge, which provides respite care for local animals with the ultimate goal of keeping pet families together.
“The corrections people are, I cannot say enough about them. They're awesome. Dana right here organizes all this stuff and she is doing this for us. She is doing all this for Murillo Mutts. All their proceeds are going to come to Murillo Mutts rescue and that's awesome,” said Peggy, a volunteer with Murillo Mutts.
“So, we love being partnered with him with these guys. She takes our dogs to corrections and walks them. These guys are awesome and any and all support is appreciated.”
