DULUTH – Costco's much-heralded arrival in Duluth, Minn may not happen after all.
According to the Duluth News-Tribune, the company has cancelled a purchase agreement to buy a piece of property at the corner of West Arrowhead and Haines roads, where they planned to build the 161,000 square foot warehouse store.
The community remains hopeful it's not the end of the Costco dream.
"The city of Duluth worked for months to advocate with and for Costco and have enjoyed a very positive working relationship," Kate Van Daele, a public information officer with the city of Duluth, told the paper.
"We are proud to lead with our values of expectation that local financial investment on the part of the city yield specific local job creation. Together with Costco we found a great way to achieve this. We’re hopeful Costco chooses to revisit their decision.”
A realtor involved in the sale told the News-Tribune it was an issue with city.
Thousands of Thunder Bay consumers make their way south of the border each year to shop. The project first came to light last fall.
