Coun. Iain Angus would rather vote to eliminate his position than see the city get rid of the ward system.

Orignally slated for the Nov.4 city council meeting, Coun. Ken Boshcoff will be introducing a motion Monday night that will ask the public to vote on whether or not Thunder Bay should move to an at-large only system. But Angus, an at-large councilor, said he'd rather see the city move to a ward only system instead.

"Even though that would do away with my own job and force me to run in Northwood," he said.

Ward councillors know the issues of their area of the city better than anyone. They also have to connect with voters in a way that at-large councillors don't, Angus said.

"We get in by virtue of our name recognition we don't have to go knocking on doors in the wards," Angus said.

Also Monday Mayor Keith Hobbs plans to get council to ask the federal government to keep its local veterans' affairs office open. Hobbs said veterans sacrificed a lot and suffer from that sacrifice. Hobbs said veterans shouldn't have to travel or sit waiting by the phone in order to get the help they need.

"They need that help right here in their own community," he said.
