THUNDER BAY — Construction along Court Street is moving north to the intersection with Red River Road.

Effective Wednesday, Aug. 16, the intersection of Court Street and Red River Road will be closed to traffic for an extended period of time.

While the intersection and parts of Court Street remain inaccessible by vehicular traffic, businesses along the stretch are still accessible by foot.

Crews have been doing extensive excavation of Court Street as part of the city's north core streetscapes project, which will renew century-old underground infrastructure including water mains and storm and sanitary sewers.

The city is also taking the opportunity to install new sidewalks and public spaces for an "enhanced pedestrian experience."

Project manager Brian Newman said in an email the project is close to being on schedule, and noted "any train tracks that exist along the construction route this and next year will be removed."

The Waterfront District BIA, representing dozens of downtown businesses, urged residents to continue visiting those impacted by the work.

“We understand that construction can be disruptive, but we're excited about the improvements this project will bring to our city,” said executive director Kara Pratt. “We encourage everyone to continue supporting the businesses in the area. Your patronage during this time is essential. Together, we'll emerge with a more beautiful and functional north core.”

Downtown reconstruction work will focus on Court Street in 2023, shutting a section of it down entirely, and could proceed onto Red River Road later this year depending on progress on Court. Construction will continue in 2024.
