The intersection of Court Street and Park Avenue reopened Friday.

THUNDER BAY — The intersection of Court Street and Park Avenue has partially reopened to traffic, in a sign of progress on a years-long, multi-million dollar rebuild of Thunder Bay’s north core.

The city announced the reopening Friday evening, while reminding drivers Park is a one-way street between Court and Cumberland Street, permitting only eastbound traffic.

Court Street remains blocked off north of Park to Red Red River Road, as work continues on that stretch.

The city emphasized that area businesses remain open during construction.

The intersection was closed earlier this year as work proceeds on a major rebuild of Thunder Bay’s north core along Court Street and Red River Road.

The project will expand public space for pedestrians, events, market displays, and greenery, while trimming Red River Road to two lanes.

The cost of the downtown renewal project, which also includes replacing nearly century-old underground services, has risen to an estimated $13 million.

Major work will continue along Red River Road during the 2024 construction season.

In Friday’s statement, the city said the disruption caused by the project will pay dividends.

“While construction-related road closures can be frustrating, the temporary inconvenience will be outweighed by the long-term benefits the completed project will provide,” the statement read.
