THUNDER BAY – The Woodcrest Public School community is being warned of possible exposure to COVID-19.
An individual who later tested positive for COVID-19 was at the Thunder Bay elementary school during their infectious period, public health authorities have determined.
However, the risk of infection to others at the school was low, the Lakehead District School Board said in a release Saturday evening.
“Although the individual with COVID-19 was at school during the time they were infectious, the risk that the virus could have spread in the school setting is deemed to be low at this time,” the board stated.
Any students, teachers, or other staff identified as low-risk contacts could continue to attend school in person, the board added. It did not disclose how many low-risk contacts had been identified.
The individual who tested positive is not a student, the board said, but would not comment further as to that person's role or how much time they had spent inside the school
The board does not provide additional details on any school-related cases "to protect the privacy of the members of our school communities," a spokesperson said.
The school board added it was working closely with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, which had initiated a comprehensive public health investigation to determine possible exposures.
The health also declined to offer further details on the outbreak, citing privacy concerns.
