THUNDER BAY – A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at the Pioneer Ridge long-term care home in Thunder Bay, after a single staff member tested positive.

The outbreak affects Area 4 of the Tungsten Street home only, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit said in a statement issued Saturday.

Provincial guidelines require the declaration of an outbreak when a single resident or staff member tests positive at a long-term care home, prompting the imposition of more stringent infection prevention and control measures.

The health unit had initiated a thorough assessment of the 150-bed home, it said, including enhanced surveillance and testing.

The city-owned facility was part of the initial rollout of the Pfizer vaccine to LTC homes, the health unit noted. Lee Mesic, LTC administrator for the city, said over 98 per cent of residents were now fully vaccinated, while staff vaccination was ongoing.
