A COVID-19 outbreak at The Walford retirement home was declared over Saturday.

THUNDER BAY – A COVID-19 outbreak at a Thunder Bay retirement home has been declared over with only one positive case recorded.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced the outbreak at The Walford on Dec. 1 after a single staff member tested positive, as required by provincial guidelines.

Saturday marked 14 days since the last shift worked by that staff member with no new cases, allowing the health unit to declare the outbreak over.

That good news was confirmed through follow-up surveillance testing of residents and staff, the health unit stated in a release Saturday.

“Prior to the outbreak, significant measures were already in place at The Walford Thunder

Bay to reduce likelihood of transmission of the virus within the facility,” the health unit noted. “Expanded precautions were implemented for the duration of the outbreak.”
