A COVID-19 outbreak that had been in effect in the 2A medical inpatient unit of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre was declared over on Oct. 18.

THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre no longer has any confirmed active outbreaks of COVID-19.

An outbreak that was declared in the 2A medical inpatient unit on Oct. 6 is over.

The hospital made the announcement Monday, but said the termination date of the outbreak was Oct. 18.

There are currently 48 patients in the hospital who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Among these cases, three are in the intensive care unit.

The hospital reported that its current medical and surgical occupancy is 100.4 per cent, while the ICU occupancy is at 86.4 per cent.

The hospital issued a statement last week advising the community that the emergency department is continuing to experience high volumes of patients, which will likely mean longer-than-normal wait times for people with less severe health issues.

"Calling an ambulance will not necessarily get you faster attention once you are at the hospital," it said.

It advised that patients should — whenever possible — first seek their primary care provider, or access other options before going to the emergency department.

Individuals who are unsure whether they have an emergency may seek advice from a registered nurse by calling Health Connect Ontario (formerly Telehealth Ontario), 24/7 at 811, or by visiting https://healthconnectontario.health.gov.on.ca/static/guest/home.
