COVID-19 outbreak at Woodcrest School, new cases at Hammarskjold (2 Photos)

Woodcrest Public School will move to virtual learning on Wednesday.

THUNDER BAY — A day after a single case of COVID-19 was reported in the Woodcrest Public School community, two additional cases have been confirmed.

The Lakehead District School Board made the disclosure late Tuesday afternoon.

It said that a public health investigation has determined the infection for one of these individuals "was likely acquired in the school setting."

As a result, an outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at Woodcrest under the criteria established by the provincial government.

Follow-up and testing of other individuals in impacted cohorts is ongoing.

Woodcrest Public school students and staff will move to virtual learning as of Wednesday Feb. 24.

The school board also announced that it has been notified by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit about two cases of COVID-19 associated with Hammarskjold High School.

At this time, it said, there is no evidence the virus has spread in the school setting.

Accordingly, the situation is not considered an outbreak.
