THUNDER BAY – COVID-19 outbreaks at three Thunder Bay public schools were declared over by public health authorities Saturday.

Outbreaks at St. James Public School, Westgate CVI, and Woodcrest Public School are all now considered over after a period of heightened surveillance by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

“No additional cases of COVID-19 have been identified and there is no evidence of additional spread within the school setting,” the health unit stated in regards to each school in releases issued Saturday.

Local students are one week into a period of virtual learning recommended by the health unit, expected to last for at least two weeks in total.

The outbreak at St. James was declared Feb. 22, after three confirmed cases detected there; The Westgate outbreak was declared Feb. 19, after four cases; and an outbreak was declared at Woodcrest on Feb. 23, after three cases.

Provincial guidelines direct health units to declare school outbreaks over when at least 14 days have passed “with no evidence of ongoing transmission that could reasonably be related to exposures in the school,” and no further infections among affected cohorts.
