THUNDER BAY – A COVID-19 outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre has been declared over, after infecting 79 people over the course of more than six weeks.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit had not reported a new case at the centre since Feb. 10.
The health unit first declared outbreaks there and at the Thunder Bay District Jail on Jan. 6, after two prisoners who had been transferred from the jail to the correctional centre tested positive.
The outbreak at the jail remains ongoing, and has infected at least 124 people.
The outbreaks spurred the transfer of dozens of inmates from the overcrowded facilities to jails in southern Ontario, and led to a declaration of emergency from the City of Thunder Bay.
