A two-vehicle crash on Highway 17 this weekend killed three people, police confirmed Monday.

Officials with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP report that the head-on crash between a passenger vehicle and a transport truck took place on Sunday just after 6:10 p.m. on Highway 17, just east of Upsala.

Thunder Bay detachment OPP Staff Sgt. Dan Peters said a 20 year-old man, 18-year-old woman, and their 11-month-old baby died Sunday night following the crash.

“The three occupants are from the region here,” he told CKPR Radio Monday morning, adding that their identities could not be made public until next of kin has been notified.

“The three occupants of the passenger vehicle were killed on impact.”
Police say the driver of the transport truck did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.

Members of the Upsala and Thunder Bay detachments of the OPP, Upsala fire department and ambulance all responded to the crash.

The passenger vehicle was heading east while the transport truck was heading west at the time of the head-on crash.

The highway was reduced to a single-lane and traffic was rerouted around the scene of the crash Sunday evening.

Police say an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
