SHUNIAH — A build-up of creosote was responsible for an early-morning fire in the Municipality of Shuniah on Sunday.
Firefighters with Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) and the Pass Lake volunteer fire team responded around 7:45 a.m. to an incident at a residence on Highway 11/17 near 5 Road South.
The first crew on the scene found the chimney rain cap had caught fire.
Two occupants of the home had already exited without injury and the fire had not spread to the house.
SFES said there was a build-up of creosote on the chimney cap and issued a reminder to the public to arrange for regular inspections of chimneys and vents for all fuel-burning appliances.
