THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews quickly extinguished a kitchen fire that caused significant damage to an intercity area home, but no injuries, early on Tuesday evening.

Firefighters observed flames and smoke emanating from the rear of a home near the corner of Northern Avenue and Harold Street after being called to a possible structure fire in the area.

The first arriving crews, which included three pumper trucks, were able to quickly knock down the fire and make entry, said TBFR Platoon Chief Darren Smallwood.

A second alarm was called, with a total of five pumpers and an aerial ladder attended the scene, along with a command vehicle.

One occupant who was inside the home at the time was able to self-evacuate safely before firefighters arrived, Smallwood said.

The kitchen sustained significant damage, he said, and other areas of the home were left with smoke damage.

An initial assessment indicated unattended cooking could have been the cause, but Smallwood said Tuesday the fire remained under investigation.
