THUNDER BAY -- Mayor Keith Hobbs says an election promise from Coun. Ken Boshcoff is nothing more than disgusting political opportunism.
In a release Thursday night mayoral candidate, former mayor and current at-large councillor Boshcoff said he would call a town hall meeting to address the city's crime issues, which has seen eight homicides this year, within one week of being elected.
Boshcoff said he shares the city's concerns about violence and wants to bring the community together. During this term of city council a crime prevention council, drug strategy and poverty reduction strategy have been adopted.
"We would have a mayor that would drive these forward," Boshcoff said. "We have a lot of great ideas."
"People expect a mayor to have steady hands on the wheel to address problems and propose solutions."
But Hobbs said Boshcoff is a sitting councillor. He could call a meeting like that now if he wanted. Instead, Boshcoff has chosen to throw council and its various strategy coordinators and community partners under the bus. Boshcoff is just trying to capitalize on an important issue.
"It's just disgusting it's political opportunism at it's worst," Hobbs said. "Where was he for the last four years?"
Boshcoff said that's not the case.
"Not at all. Basically we've got a lot of good plans. What you need is a leader with drive who can bring a community together instead of dividing people," he said.
