THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay will provide curbside collection of organic leaf and yard waste beginning this week.
Collection will take place on residents’ regular recycling days between Nov. 1 and 10.
Recycling collection will move one day earlier than usual during the week of Nov. 7, due to Remembrance Day, the city noted.
The leaf and yard waste must be put out for collection in Kraft paper bags, which are available at most hardware and grocery stores, the city said.
The weight limit for the bags is 40 pounds. There is no limit on the number of bags per household.
Branches and brush can also be left at the curb in bundles, which must be no more than 39 inches long and 24 inches in diameter, and tied using string or rope.
Grass clippings will not be accepted.
Manager of solid waste and recycling services Jason Sherband said in a statement the program brings multiple benefits for residents.
“The organic waste that is picked up is added to the compost pile at the city’s Solid Waste & Recycling Facility. The resulting rich compost is made available to residents free of charge at certain times of year for their flower gardens and lawns.”
Residents can contact the city’s infrastructure and operations dispatch at 625-2195 for more information.
