An absent Coun. Trevor Giertuga could delay a move to make Dawson Road a community safety zone.
Council has been asked to considering deferring the matter on Monday night when it hits the weekly agenda, to allow Giertuga, whose McIntyre Ward houses the dually owned road, to take part in the debate.
The issue was referred to the city's inter-governmental liaison committee to draft a bylaw about the ongoing issue of truck traffic on the busy thoroughfare, which is city maintained for a portion, the remainder belonging to the province.
Several residents had asked council to ban truck traffic from Dawson Road, citing danger for both motorists and pedestrians.
But council quickly learned provincial policy would not allow the ban to continue the entire length of the highway, which truckers use as a shortcut heading east and west, as opposed to using the Shabaqua Extension.
The IGLC discussed the matter at a pair of meetings, passing a motion that would make Dawson Road a community safety zone, thereby gradually increasing speeds along the route and doubling speeding fines, in hopes of discouraging truckers in a hurry from using it.
Council, in earlier talks, also discussed length and weight restrictions on their portion of Dawson Road.
