THUNDER BAY — A traffic enforcement blitz on a busy north side route has resulted in over 300 charges and more than a dozen vehicles taken off the road.
The traffic blitz was conducted by the Thunder Bay Police Service on Dawson Road and Highway 11/17 between July 24-26 and led to 324 charges being laid and 17 vehicles taken out of service.
The targeted traffic enforcement project was a collaborative effort between the Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit and the Ministry of Transportation.
According to the Thunder Bay Police Service, many of the offences relate to speeding, with one stunt driving charge being laid for a motorist travelling 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Other offences include unsafe vehicles, emissions, equipment and document offences, and insecure loads.
With the help of a drone on one of the enforcement days, 30 charges relating to following too closely were laid on commercial vehicles.
“Businesses and residents who live in or travel through this area of Dawson Road have often highlighted their significant safety concerns due to problematic driving behaviours from passenger and commercial vehicle motorists,” the Thunder Bay Police Service said in a media release.
“In response to these ongoing safety concerns, the Thunder Bay Police Service will continue to conduct focused traffic enforcement in the area. This may come in the form of future multi-unit and multi-agency projects, or day-to-day patrols.”
