THUNDER BAY - As you move your clocks back one hour Sunday morning when daylight saving time ends, it’s important to remember one more crucial step during the annual time change.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding the public to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
“With the pending time change comes an opportunity to educate the community about the importance of testing and changing the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, “ said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue chief John Hay. “Working smoke alarms give you the early warning needed to safely escape a fire, and only a carbon monoxide alarm can alert you to the presence of CO.”
Under the Ontario Fire Code, smoke alarms are required on every level of a home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required outside all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-fired appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage.
Duel smoke alarms/carbon monoxide alarms are available and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue recommends replacing old smoke alarms with the new models.
Hardwired and battery-operate smoke alarms are required to be replaced every 10 years.
