Demonstrations to close Bay Street Thursday afternoon

THUNDER BAY - A planned peaceful demonstration ahead of a meet and greet hosted by Conservative Party of Canada leadership hopeful Peter MacKay will result in the closure of a section of Bay Street Thursday afternoon. 

Thunder Bay Police are advising the public that Bay Street will be closed between Algoma Street and Secord Street starting at 2 p.m. Motorists can expect delays and are being asked to avoid the area. 

MacKay will be holding a meet and greet with local conservatives at the Finlandia Club at 5 p.m. Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler announced Wednesday night that he and Fort William First Nation Chief Peter Collins will be standing in solidarity outside at 4:30 p.m. 

 Fiddler referred to social media comments made by MacKay  that he says incite violence against Indigneous people and that the language he and his staff use is offensive and dangerous.
