OPAPIMISKAN LAKE, ON — Work crews at Goldcorp's Musselwhite gold mine, 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, are still pumping water out of underground shafts affected by last month's fire.

A fire that started in a conveyor belt on March 29 resulted in a power shutdown which stopped the pumps that keep water out of work areas.

Although some electrical substations were powered up last week, underground production still has not resumed.

A spokesperson for Goldcorp says that after the fire, crews were dispatched to access and systematically clear sections of the mine, gradually re-establishing underground communications and dewatering.

In a statement to Tbnewswatch, Christine Marks said Thursday that "at this time we are unable to provide a timeline for when production will re-start."

Surface operations are not affected.

The Musselwhite mine employs about 700 people.
