DFC Amazing Race gets students acquainted with city

Students from Dennis Franklin Cromarty tour the city ahead of this weekend's Wake the Giant music festival.

THUNDER BAY — Students from Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School are taking the city by storm in an Amazing Race-style adventure ahead of the Wake The Giant music festival this weekend.

The initiative is meant to showcase the city to students so they can understand how to use the city bus system and know where key points in the city are located.

Matthew Tilbury, the schools transition coordinator, said it's an important experience for students.

"It's a great way for our students to learn a whole bunch of different transit routes and meet some businesses and organizations throughout the city," he said.

"[Students] also get comfortable with their classmates, and it's just an overall really fun day for them to participate in. We try to partner with places that we really want them to know about and get them familiar with those places."

Students like Jaeda Kitchkeesick, who's from Fort William First Nation, said that this is her first time going to DFC and her first time doing the "DFC Amazing Race "adventure.

"I've never been on the city bus, and I've lived here my whole life, and it's kind of cool," she said.

She also noted that this is really helpful for students from out of town.

"I know pretty much where everything is, but for someone new, especially living in like an up north community [and] coming to a big town, you might be a little nervous. With the school doing this, it kind of makes them more comfortable."
