THUNDER BAY —The Ontario Disability Employment Network recognizes many local businesses that "champion a diverse and inclusive workforce" and hosts a Cheers to Inclusion event in the city alongside it.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month and the timely event at the Slovak Legion celebrates businesses that acknowledge the contributions made by persons who experience disability.

Todd Kennedy, manager of March of Dimes Canada—Northwest Region, said their local team works with more than 50 employers in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario that have hired people living with disabilities and barriers to employment.

He added that other organizations also work with employers to provide inclusive employment for persons living with disabilities.

Hiring workers living with disabilities offers benefits for businesses and the community, Kennedy said.

"It provides access to a talented workforce where there are many skilled and enthusiastic individuals with disabilities ready to contribute to the workforce," he said.

"Inclusive businesses that hire people with disabilities often see a significant boost in productivity and profits.

"Studies have shown that these businesses can grow profits up to three times faster than their competitors."

Kennedy added another benefit is that employees with disabilities tend to have higher retention rates, which reduces turnover costs and the time spent on hiring and training new staff. Also, companies that prioritize inclusivity and accessibility are often viewed more favourably by consumers — by 92 per cent of consumers.

"A diverse workforce brings a variety of perspectives, which can lead to greater creativity and innovation," Kennedy said.

"This diversity can help businesses develop new products and services that better meet the needs of a broader customer base."

Kennedy said two awards will be presented during the recognition event to two local employers who have embraced the program and are mentors when called upon when there is an expressed interest in employment within their types of organizations.

Employers who wish to explore hiring people with disabilities can contact the March of Dimes Canada employment services team directly at 807-345-6595.
